Plans to close up to a quarter of all Guardia Civil barracks across Spain have been indefinitely shelved after fears for public safety were raised following the decision to slash local governments.
The original draft proposal was made in 2011, maintained by the current government, that would see many smaller units close down and merged into larger premises, which would operate a 24 hour shift system. The barracks were to be strategically placed no more than 40 kilometres apart, gibing a radius of around 20 kilometres for the operations of the particular base.
How, following the Local Government Reform Act, countless mayors and politicians have raised their voice of concern, as the administrative numbers are reduced, the risk to the safety of citizens would be greater, in their opinion.
Now, following talks with the Director General of the Guardia Civil, the move has been abandoned, as “now is not the time” to carry out the planned mergers.
