The Spanish traffic department, the DGT, is prepared to manage around five million car journeys on Spanish roads during the second phase of the special Christmas traffic operation, which runs from the 27th of December until the 1st of January.
This time period is set to be the most intense on the road network, along with the pre Christmas period. Already, 22 people lost their lives on the roads in phase one of the operation.
According to the DGT, at this time of year, celebrations are dominated by family get-togethers, with school and university holidays meaning the whole family has a chance to meet up. As a result, this generates a series of short movement journeys, as well as long distance trips, especially on weekends and holidays whose main destinations are places where families have second homes, shopping centres and mountainous areas for the practice of winter sports and winter tourist attractions.
The third and final phase, which focuses around the Three Kings, will operate between the 3rd and the 6th of January, although this is the quietest of the three phases, with 3.3 million trips expected.
The Dgt advise proper planning of routes, choosing the safest and most timely way to travel, wearing seatbelts, using lights during the day as well as at night and avoiding alcohol.
