The new General Telecommunications Act has finally been approved by the Spanish Governement. The long-awaited update to the 2003 Act was approved by all main parties, the PP, PSOE, CiU and PNV, who all voted in favour of the proposed amendments, 179 in total.
The new law will simplify the procedures for operators to invest in fibre optic and 4G networks by scrapping licenses and tax charges, introducing market unity and ensuring future access to networks in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner
The amendment also contain measures that will reduce the digital divide and increase broadband access with a commitment to guarantee a minimum broadband connection speed of 10Mbps across the whole of Spain by 2017.
In addition, the government will collaborate with Spain’s autonomous communities to extend 30 Mbps coverage to public institutions such as universities, schools and libraries by 2016.
