The latest data published by the census department reveals two very striking statistics for the city of Torrevieja, firstly, despite the reduction in British and German residents, the population in May has reached its highest figure ever, and secondly, that the now fastest growing community are the Russians, boasting one of the largest number of permanent residents in the country.
The resident registered population of Torrevieja now stands at 108,060, breaking the 108,000 figure for the first time in history, with an additional 660 residents joining the census since the start of the year. Of that number, just 46% are Spanish, a total of 50,721, the majority 54% being immigrants.
There are now 12,747 British residents, still holding the highest proportion, but with the 3,906 German residents, the collective figure has reduced by 700. Now in second place are the Russian residents, with a total of 5,035, the first time the 5,000 barrier has been reached, but with many Russians choosing not to register as residents, the real figure is known to be much higher. Whereas the British and German communities have dropped, the Russian registered population has increased by 110 residents in just 5 months, since the start of the year.
Other groups boasting high figures are 3,239 residents from Sweden, 3,077 from Morocco, 2,971 from Bulgaria, 2,762 from Romania, 2,402 from Norway, 2,230 from Ukraine, 1,651 from Belgium, and a total of 1,343 from Finland, collectively combining as part of the total of 116 nationalities represented by the diverse and culturally enriched immigrant population of the city.
