An End to Corruption
The Spanish Congress will debate a motion tabled by the socialist PSOE group on Tuesday, to ultimately decide on a change in the current law which allows politicians to be pardoned if found guilty in corruption cases in the courts.
Listen to this articleThe PSOE first recorded the motion in December 2013, following the request by the Partido Popular to pardon some of their members who had been found guilty of criminal offences, including the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo.
The current law, which has been in place since 1870, allows politicians to plea for a pardon in full or in part, in cases relating to misuse of their position in public office or financially benefitting from it.
