Barcelona is to ban cars that are older than 20 years from the area’s roads on a weekday to try to slash air pollution by 30 percent.

The measure will start in January 2019 and will cover Barcelona and the 39 surrounding municipalities. The law means that it will be illegal to drive private cars registered before January 1997 and vans registered before October 1994 on working days.

Although the ban does not come into force for two years, those vehicles will already be banned from the roads during periods of high pollution from December this year.
