Pets Permitted to Visit Patients in Hospital
In a pioneering scheme in Spain, patients having to stay in hospital for treatment will at least be able to gain some comfort by their pets being allowed to visit them at their bedside.
The scheme has been devised through a collaboration between the College of Veterinarians of Alicante and Ribera Salud, and has been tested in the hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopó in Elche.
To qualify for a hospital visit, the patient must first obtain consent from the doctor in charge of treatment, and a certificate from a vet.
As reported by the company in a statement, this new protocol, developed as a response to the request of the patients themselves, has been under trial for some time, and is applied to the University Hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopó (Elche). It is the only such service in mainland Spain, with the only other being the Dogspital program at the Hospital de Ibiza.
