10 years in prison for matricide after driving test failure

The First Section of the Provincial Court of Castellón has sentenced a man who killed his mother after stabbing her with a kitchen knife to ten years in prison for the crime of homicide with the aggravating factor of kinship, but with the mitigation of confession.

The man must also compensate his brother with 150,000 euro. The sentence has been declared final, since it was handed down after the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the defendant’s defence reached an agreement, formulated a joint brief of conclusions and expressed their intention not to appeal.

The killing occurred in December 2020, in the town of Vinaròs. At around 6:00 p.m. on the day of the incident, in the kitchen of the family home, the convicted man and his mother began an argument caused by the fact that he had not passed his driver’s licence test.

At one point in the discussion, the defendant struck the victim several times in the face, took a knife with a blade length of 21 centimetres and plunged it into her chest. The woman died on the spot.

After the attack, the attacker called his father to come to the home, but he told him that he could not because he was outside Vinaròs, for which he apologised and hung up the phone.

Next, he left his house to ask for help from the neighbours, who called the 112 emergency telephone number. According to the account of the proven facts that appear in the judicial resolution, the murderer himself confessed to the Local Police and Guardia Civil crews that came to the scene where he had stabbed his mother. The health services could only certify the death of the woman.
