Up to 25 trawlers have been attracted to Torrevieja from Barcelona, Castellón, Murcia and Almeria in whose waters they are expected to spend the next few days harvesting anchovies and other high value blue fish.
The Torrevieja waters would normally accommodate boats from the coast of Murcia (Mazarrón, Aguilas) and the coast of Almeria (Carboneras, Adra). They have now been joined by trawlers from Castellón as well as Catalan registered vessels from Barcelona
Following initial hauls, amounting to approximately 106,000 kilos, the trawlers crowded into the Torrevieja fish market early last week where they waited in turn to sell their catches.
The market is not used to such intense activity where there is now a lack of dock space which has been further reduced to cater for the expansion of the tourist activity at the Club Nautico.
