INCREASE OF 7.9% IN TOURIST SPEND

According to the Tourist Expenditure Survey (EGATUR), drafted by the Institute for Tourism Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, spending in Spain by inbound tourists in the first five months of the year amounted to 18.43 billion euros, up 7.9% on the same month in 2012.

Spending by inbound tourists amounted to 5.1 billion euros in May. This is an increase of 8.9% on the same month of 2012. The average spend per person rose by 1.4% and the average spend per day fell by 0.9%. However, the average length of stay increased by 2.3%.

The United Kingdom and Germany led the spending growth and the Balearic Islands were the main destination to benefit from these increases.
The United Kingdom was the top emitting market in May in terms of tourist spending, with an increase of 13.8% to a total of 1.1 billion euros – the fifth consecutive month of growth.

The Balearic Islands was the destination that most benefited from this result, as well as the Canary Islands and Catalonia. In the first five months of the year, the British market spent a total of 3.39 billion euros – an increase of 6.9% on the same period of 2012.

German tourists spent a total of 840 million euros in Spain in May – 11.6% more than in May last year – with the Balearic Islands being their main destination. So far this year, the German market has spent 3.05 billion euros in Spain – an increase of 3.3% on the first five months of last year.

France was the third largest market with an increase of 14.1% in spending when compared with May 2012 to a total of 440 million euros, which mainly benefited Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Catalonia. So far this year, the French market has spent 1.85 billion euros in Spain – an increase of 24% on the first five months of last year.

In a continuation of the trend in previous months, the Nordic countries increased their spending by 10% to a total of 353 million euros. The main destinations benefiting from this result were Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Catalonia. However, both the average spend per person and per day in this market posted falling figures. So far this year, spending has increased by 16.2% to 2.11 billion euros.

Italian tourists spent a total of 166 million euros in May, a decline of 14.5% on the previous year. This decline was particularly felt by the Region of Madrid, while the Canary Islands and Catalonia posted an overall increase in spending by these tourists. The average spend per person also increased. So far this year, spending by Italian tourists has fallen by 18.1% to 676 million euros.

Catalonia – the top destination and accounting for 25% of all tourist spending in May – posted an increase of 10.5% on May 2012. The main markets for this region were Germany and the United Kingdom, although noteworthy spending figures were also posted by the Russian market. In the first five months of the year, inbound tourists spent a total of 4.19 billion euros in this region – an increase of 10.7% on the same period last year.

The second destination in terms of spending and first in terms of its percentage increase was the Balearic Islands, mainly due to the contributions from German and British tourists. The region posted total tourist spending in May of 1.08 billion euros – the third consecutive month of growth at a rate of 21.6%. Both the average spend per person and per day rose in May, as they did in the two previous months. So far this year, a total of 2.03 billion euros has been spent by inbound tourists in the Balearic Islands – an increase of 11.4%.

Andalusia was the third destination in terms of tourist spending in May, with an increase of 4.2% to a total of 748 million euros that was mainly due to the spending by Nordic and French tourists. However, a decline was posted for both the average spend per person and per day. In the first five months of the year, a total of 2.68 billion euros was spent by inbound tourists in Andalusia – an increase of 5.6% on the same period of 2012.

The Canary Islands posted an increase of 14.8% in tourist spending in May. Tourist spending amounted to 661 million euros – 13% of the total – and was greatly influenced by the influx of British tourists. The positive trend of the last year was maintained in May in terms of both absolute spending and in terms of the average spend per person and per day. The Canary Islands lead the country in terms of accumulated tourist spending for the year, with 4.64 billion euros with growth of 8%.

The Region of Madrid posted a decline of 3.1% due to the shrinking Italian market. Inbound tourists spent a total of 570 million euros in May and, although the average spend per person increased, the average spend per day fell. So far this year, inbound tourists have spent 1.95 billion euros in Madrid – an increase of 2.8% on last year.

The Region of Valencia posted a 5.7% increase in tourist spending in May. Inbound tourists spent 453 million euros in May and 1.61 billion in the first five months of the year, with an increase of 16.9% on the accumulated total for last year.

In May, spending by those tourists who opted for hotel accommodation rose by 4.5% to 3.46 billion euros, while spending by those tourists associated with non-hotel accommodation rose by 19.6% to 1.63 billion euros. The accumulated totals for the first five months of the year amounted to 12.19 billion euros and 6.24 billion euros, respectively.

Spending by tourists who travelled independently – accounting for 67.9% of the total – amounted to 3.46 billion euros – an increase of 14.7% – while spending by those who travelled on a package holiday amounted to 1.64 billion euros – a decline of 1.6%).
