Three swimmers were each handed out fines of 750 euros last week for going out spearfishing after sunset. They were arrested at Cala de la Zorra for the offence described as a safety violation against municipal beaches and the coastline.

The fines are said to be a deterrent against the increasing number of night divers using the local shoreline, especially during the summer. The activity seems to be particularly popular in the two hours following sunset when marine life is said to be in full swing.

Especially in cliffs and rocky areas, where many species hide in small cracks and crevices during the day and take advantage of the night to feed.

Although night diving is allowed in some areas, in areas near ports or marine reserves, in view of the special safety requirements, potential divers are required to register their activities with the competent authority.

Mayor Eduardo Dolon (PP) has signed several decrees dealing with such fines imposed by the Civil Guard in the municipality which has just published a detailed guide to the best sites for scuba diving and snorkeling in the region.
