Local police in Orihuela arrested two men at the weekend, suspected of being responsible for several burglaries on the Orihuela Costa.

The arrests took place in the Barranco area, when officers saw a vehicle with three occupants driving in the opposite direction to the police vehicle. The police were aware, according to the testimony a number of witnesses that the occupants were suspected of committing a burglary on the Orihuela Costa, and so turned around to follow them, but the suspect vehicle fled at high speed.

There was a considerable risk to pedestrians as the car sped away, but the police gave chase, with the suspect vehicle eventually stopping and the occupants fleeing on foot.

The chase continued on foot into the Argenta I urbanisation, where the police managed to catch two of the men, the other managing to escape through a window of a house. Although they attempted to resist arrest, the police officers used “the minimum force necessary” to detain and handcuff them.

The two detainees are natives of Algeria, and are aged 45 and 49 year, were searched and found to be carrying a large screwdriver in the vehicle, along with gloves, three pairs of sunglasses, a laptop and cash.

In a separate incident, the police also arrested two more men of Algerian nationality, aged 34 and 37, accused of stealing a woman´s purse. The motive used was for one of the man to alert the driver to a problem with the vehicle, whilst the second then stole the purse which had been left on the passenger seat of the car.

Following a report of the crime to the police, surveillance was stepped up at the supermarket car park where the incident happened, and a few hours later the officers spotted the two men, matching the descriptions given, in a car which also matched that of the previous incident.

Having spotted the police, the occupants of the car fled on foot, but were chased by the police, who did catch up with them, but the police met with “strong resistance” to this arrest, by the two detainees kicking and punching officers, but they were still detained and arrested.
