LEND ME YOUR EYES BACK FOR 3RD YEAR
The patio of la biblioteca was the venue last week for a preparatory meeting of representatives of the various working groups for the project “Lend me your eyes”. It was attended by Fernando and Carmen Muñoz Guardiola the director and the coordinator of the group.
This valuable service is provided by a number of volunteers, who read newspapers, magazines and books to those who are blind, who cannot read or have poor sight. And while in the UK we have had such programs as ‘Newspapers for the Blind’, made popular by Lions, Rotary, Ladies Circle and Round Table Clubs back in the seventies, this charitable concept is virtually brand new to Spain having been around for just 2 years.
It was decided that the principle venues to be used in the next campaign will be Residencias de La Loma, administered by the Carmelite Sisters, Los Jardines de Clara and a new addition this year, Mar de Levante en la Playa del Cura, as well as a number of private homes.
The Director was delighted to announce that there are currently in excess of a hundred volunteer readers who have applied to join the project but this year only eight will be required.
This year the project will also be launched by Age Concern, the association of British residents, which, according to a spokesman, has many needy patients who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s
As such the campaign is now seeking British and Irish readers who will be willing to join the campaign by offering a few hours a week to this extremely needy cause. They should call 695 075 626 or contact staff at the Municipal Public Library.
The readings will begin on Wednesday, September 25, in both the mornings and afternoons.
