Despite numerous internal conflicts and disputes, the Local Police of Torrevieja has significantly reduced the overtime expenditure, with a 60% saving in the last four years.
A new series of rotas had been one of the biggest issues of late, as well as conflicts with the town hall and the councillors responsible for their management.
But it’s not only in overtime where figures are reducing, this week saw four of their police patrol vehicles disappear from the parking lot in front of the station, three cars and a multi-use vehicle used by the GRO team to tackle the illegal street sellers.
The reason for their removal was an expired lease, with a new contract not coming into operation until October. The Local Police of Torrevieja had already lost three vehicles earlier in the year, now totalling a reduction of six patrol cars and the GRO vehicle.
There is no reduction in services anticipated however, with some officers now patrolling on foot, others using municipal vehicles such as the tow-truck to sanction parking offences, and it is not anticipated that there will be further embarrassment to the town hall after the former councillor for the police, Eduardo Gil Rebollo, commandeered charity donated vehicles for police use. It is possible however that the police start to use vehicles which have been left unclaimed from the municipal pound, two vehicles already having been acquired in this way, as was also the case in Orihuela.
