Torrevieja played host to young entrepreneurs this week, all having entered a competition to try to secure funding for their start-ups. With the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón presiding over the awards ceremony aimed at encouraging young people to create new companies and therefore reduce unemployment in the hardest hit age group, the first prize of 7,000 euro was awarded to Arena Park, a company run by Daniel and Eloy Tarazaga, which provides children’s entertainment, games, catering and extra-curricular activities.

The court in Elche has sentenced a 51 year old Belgian builder, identified with the initials M. P. C. C., to 23 years in prison, after he was found guilty of the murder of a 53 year old Belgian woman, Bernadette Lepiece, in Torrevieja in April 2007, whom he beat up with a “mace or crowbar”, leaving her just alive, although she died the next day as a result of the injuries. The man´s son, a 24 year old, was acquitted as he left the scene whilst his father was still beating the woman. It is believed that the man beat the woman to death because she owed him money for work on her property.

As their contribution to World Mental Health, held each year on the 10th of October, the Department of Psychiatry for Torrevieja held various activities this week aimed at raising awareness of the work done for people with mental illness, to end the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health problems. The campaign stated that 56% of the general population confuse intellectual and learning difficulties with mental illness, for which they attempted to highlight the differences, as well as presenting a positive view of the possibilities of personal autonomy and recovery.

Spokesperson for the Esquerra Unida in Elche, Juan Antonio Cano, has denounced the situation of the Asfeme residential and day care centre, which he says is not operating due to the “lack of funding from the Generalitat Valenciana”. In a statement, Cano continued, “workers of the association are paid months late, just as with aid for mental health patients in situations of dependency”, detailing how numerous cases exist in which people affected in Elche are being derived by the Hospital Vinalopó and Torrevieja. Whereas the “stability of the patients or the economy as families who are forced to travel” to the hospitals, which shows a lack of municipal policy and a breach of current legislation by the Government.

The Deputy Mayor of Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, has met with the consul for Spain in St. Petersburg, Ricardo Peidró, in order to look at expanding joint collaboration lines, in particular towards tourism. So far, tourism activities between the Russian region and the Costa Blanca has increased by 25%.
