Two would-be robbers were arrested last Wednesday morning by a joint task force of the Guardia Civil and Policia Locale after they had been tackled and penned in by four residents of Aldeas de Aguamarina in Cabo Roig.

The attempted robbery took place on the urbanisation late on Tuesday night but as a couple were arriving home from a night out with friends they saw movement on the roof of a property which, following the death of its owner, was known to be empty.

The couple reported the suspected movement to other community residents who immediately went to inspect the property themselves. They were able to recruit additional assistance en route.

The youngest member of the residents then climbed onto the roof of the property and after close inspection confirmed that a roof panel had been forced and entry gained. At that point the emergency services were called on 112. An English speaking operator took the call and assistance was immediately despatched with officers of the Policia Locale arriving at the urbanisation within 3 minutes of the call being made.

The information was passed to the Policia Locale who were joined by two members of the Guardia Civil moments later. Having scaled and entered the building two arrests were then made by the officers. The alleged robbers, both said to be of Spanish origin, and thought to be aged 25 and 20, were immediately cuffed and pulled up onto the roof and then dropped down onto the pavement below where they were held by the community residents. They were subsequently taken to the Guardia Civil station in Torre de la Horadada where they remain in custody.

On gaining entry to the property the police recovered a large toolbag full of door locks, over 20 keys, pliers, mole grips, screwdrivers, hammers, jemmy bars and gloves although the two accused insisted that they were only looking for somewhere to sleep.

A police spokesman suggested that the alleged robbers had probably intended to use the property as a base on the urbanisation from where they would carry out further break ins. They had all the trademark equipment including a large bunch of door keys and the locks which they probably intended to change.

One of the alleged robbers was apparently well known to police in the local area.
