Fire tragedy in court

The Provincial Court of Valencia will hear evidence from today, Monday, against a man whom the Prosecutor’s Office accuses of a crime of murder, three crimes of injury and one of fire in a house inhabited for, allegedly, causing a fire on a farm in Valencia in which a three-year-old boy died and his mother and two brothers, also minors, were injured.

The jury must decide whether on December 10, 2020, the defendant went to a Malvarrosa farm where he thought his former sentimental partner lived, with whom he had had a 20-year relationship that had ended a month earlier. Once at the door of the building, the man tried to contact the woman, who had moved shortly before, without telling the defendant.

The jury will determine if, at one point in the afternoon and with the intention of harming and intimidating his ex-partner, the man sneaked into the farm, went up to the fourth floor and set fire to some furniture that was next to the door of the flat where he believed the woman still lived.

The fire caused a large fire throughout the building, in which the minor died of suffocation as a result of smoke inhalation and injuries to the two other children, aged six and eight, and the mother, aged 39, who were on the top floor.
