CHANGE TRAINS FOR A QUICKER JOURNEY

According to the latest timetable information released by Spanish train operator RENFE, the only direct service from Alicante to France will be withdrawn from the 15th of December.

However, despite the reduction in the long distance service, the journey will take less time, generally, and be cheaper, although timetables and prices are of course subject to change and availability.

Leaving on Monday the 11th of December, the 11:09 departure from Alicante to Montpellier will arrive over 10 hours later, at 21:14, at a single ticket price of 100 euro. However, leaving a week later, on the 17th, the 11:09 departure means a change of trains, but your journey will end in Montpellier at 20:21, taking just over 9 hours, arriving an hour earlier then the previous week. Not only that, the ticket price is also cheaper, working out at just 85 euro, one way.

If you want to travel from somewhere a little closer, your departure time from Orihuela will still be 10:01, arriving at the earlier time of 20:21, at just over 87 euro for your 10 hour and 20 minute journey, compared to 103 euro for the 11 hour and 13 minute journey of this week.

Meanwhile, Renfe have also announced changed to their onboard catering and premiere services for their high-speed train network. Their new “Preferente” ticket will feature a variety of travel benefits over the standard ticket price, such as use of the executive lounge, free parking and possibility to carry a pet, but the at seat meal element has been removed, resulting in a cheaper ticket than before.

Instead, food will be available from their new, “Cafetería Móvil”, or “trolley service” as we might call it, which will make its way along the train during the course of the journey. That also means that passenger in standard or economy seats will also be able to take advantage of the service, as, “Turista” and “Turista +” tickets will also be offered refreshments, as well as a buffet car on most services, all at the same price as before.
