PRISON CALL FOR ANIMAL ABUSER

The criminal court in Madrid has welcomed the first case brought to them for proceedings against the alleged killer of a dog, for crimes of animal abuse reported by the “El Refugio” animal protection group.

This is the first case of its kind in the history of Spain, with evidence provided by two veterinary surgeons, and although the case dates back to 2008, prosecutors are pleased that this kind of abuse is finally being dealt with by the courts, due to the severity of the case.

On the 5th of June, 2008, six month old dog, “Chula”, was seen to urinate and defecate on the floor in the home owned by the accused. It is then alleged that the dog was kicked by the man, which was witnessed by his girlfriend.

The girlfriend then noticed that the dog appeared unwell, and was falling into a rapidly deteriorating state, which prompted her to seek immediate medical assistance by taking the dog to the nearest vet.

Upon arrival at the surgery, the vet asked what had happened, to which the woman explained what she had witnessed and the preceding events.

The vet managed to stabilize Chula, and then referred the dog immediately to another clinic with more resources for emergency surgery, but due to the severity of the injury, the dog died of a traumatic hepatic rupture.

A representative from the El Refugio group, who coordinated the case, is demanding a sentence of one year in prison for the alleged perpetrator, for the crime of animal abuse.

Nacho Paunero, the President of El Refugio, said, “The wait has been long, but it was well worth it. It is the first time that the Spanish courts judge a person for an alleged crime of animal abuse, thanks to two veterinary surgeons statements. It is a huge source of joy for all who are dedicated to defending and protecting the rights of animals. It is imperative that each person who is a witness in a case of abuse denounce it or contact us to help curb this social evil of animal abuse in our country”.

The group is involved in nearly 100 criminal, civil and administrative cases in different regions relating to animal abuse.
