A vehicle belonging to the Guardia Civil in Pilar de la Horadada had to be abandoned last week when the two officers using it were attacked by fleas while on patrol.
They initially thought it was the rural terrain through which they were travelling but when the bites persisted they realized that the vehicle was actually infested. The situation, the second in only a couple of weeks, was immediately denounced by their union, The Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC).
A spokesman said that this is just one of many occupational hazards faced by Guardia officers and that the vehicle had now been taken out of service subject to its fumigation.
One of the agents said he was bitten on the arm on a number of occasions before he realized that the vehicle was infested by fleas.
A similar incident was reported just two weeks ago in a vehicle belonging to the Guardia Civil stationed in Fontcalent Prison.
The AUGC in Alicante issued a statement saying that they regret the incidents, both of which resulted in injuries to officers, and that they have to work daily in such precarious conditions, whilst the authorities seem to show little care.
However sources at the headquarters of the Civil Guard said that they were unaware of the incident in Pilar de la Horadada.
