Unemployment rose in August by 10,365 people in Andalusia on the previous month, bringing the number of unemployed in the autonomous region to 1,026,081, according to data released by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

According to the data, the unemployment rate rose in August by 1.02% in Andalusia over July, up from 0.83% in the whole country.

In the last year, from August 2011 to August 2012, unemployment has increased by 106,579 people in Andalusia, which represents a rise of 11.59%. In the entire state, unemployment has increased by 497,707 people last year, representing 11.98%.

By provinces, Malaga was the only one where unemployment fell in August, registering 46 fewer unemployed than in July, representing a drop of 0.02%, while it increased in the other seven of the autonomous regions. The province that registered the greatest rise in unemployment has been Cordoba, with more than 2012 unemployed in August (2.16%). In Almeria, unemployment rose 0.98%, 787 people.

By sector, registered unemployment in Andalusia increased especially in the service sector, with 15,042 more unemployed; industry, with 840 more unemployed, and agriculture, with 115 more unemployed. Unemployment fell in the group without previous employment, with 5,484 fewer unemployed, and construction, with 148 fewer unemployed.

By gender, of the 1,026,081 registered unemployed last month in Andalusia, most were women, with 516,031 unemployed, while 510,050 were men.

Social security

On the other hand, the average membership paying in to the Social Security system in Andalusia fell by 0.77% in the month of August compared to the average of the previous month, bringing the average membership to 2,752,006 engaged in the community. In relation to the same month last year, the average membership has dropped 95,894 people, representing a decrease of 3.37%.

Nationwide, Social Security in August recorded an average decline of 136,762 members from July, which stood at a total of 16,895,977 occupied at the end of the month, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. This figure breaks the trend of the past five months, which posted gains of affiliates. So, in July represented the fifth consecutive rises and, after June, the month in which added 31,332 members and exceeded the 17 million for the first time this year. In annual terms, Social Security in August reduced the number of contributors by 604,541 people (-3.45%), about half of the drop in August, 2009, with 1,136,246 workers (-5.94%) .

With respect to recruitment, the total number of contracts registered in August 2012 totalled 2,148,940 in Andalucia, of which 2,075,832 were temporary contracts, 96.6% of the total, and the rest, 73,108, were permanent, 3.4% of the total.
