In honour of ‘Dia de la Mujer’ (10th March), the provincial Spanish language newspaper, La Voz de Almeria, published ‘a tribute to the women of Almeria, who through their dedication, their professional or personal profile or through their endeavours are the making of Almeria day by day’.
Among the 1000 women recognised by the publication for their contribution to Almeria is Maura Hillen, President of Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (AUAN), the group that campaigns on behalf of the owners of illegal homes in the province. She is one of only a handful of recent émigrés to Almeria who made it onto the list.
Others include the president of the Russian Cultural Association, Marina Borzenkova and Melanie Homberg, the Belgian president of the Association Vecinos Urba-Roquemar.
