A man was killed when he was hit by a train in Alicante on Sunday after he attempted to cross the track with a group of friends as they went fishing. The track was closed for 24 hours while accident investigators attended the scene.
He died just 20 metres from a sign forbidding pedestrians from crossing the track. An engaged couple were both killed at the same spot a year ago prior to which, in 2002, three hikers died, a 12 year old child, her 50 year old mother and a man of 65 years, while participating in a night walk with a group of 154 people from Elche.
The victim was identified as a 59 year old male resident of El Campello. He died at approximately 11.30 am on Sunday morning on a straight stretch of single track near the San Gabriel station. The train was travelling toward Elche. The driver said never saw the dead man but felt and heard the blow as the train killed him instantly
National Police, Local Police, Fire and Samu ambulance services were all called to the scene but could do nothing other than collect evidence and remove the body.
The stretch of track was closed for about 2 hours while investigations were carried out.
During the two hours that the service was cut, Renfe established a bus transfer service between the resorts of Alicante and Torrellano
All indications are that the man was returning from fishing when crossing the track. It is an area that is frequented by swimmers and fishermen who regularly use it as a crossing point despite the history of fatalities and the large adjacent warning sign.
