CHURCH REFUSES DISABLED GIRL COMMUNION

The Bishop of Orihuela – Alicante has confirmed that the priest in Monforte del Cid was correct to refuse a disabled girl the rights to her first holy communion when her mother applied in September, on the grounds that he was unable to understand what the girl was saying, as it “responds to the rules of the church”.

Friends and the family have now decided to move their religious activities to another church, along with the support of around 1,000 signatories of a petition in support of the child, although the mother has said that she doesn´t want any action to be taken against the priest, and that she was simply “surprised” by his attitude.

The girl, who is seven years old, suffers from Lenox Syndrome, a severe disability to which the mother admitted that she would probably not understand the process of the sacrament. Meanwhile, the Catholic church responded that they have no intention to discriminate, but a person “must have a minimum of knowledge of what it means”, and that the matter poses a “very sensitive issue, and we are confident that the mother thinks she is doing what is best for her daughter, but with the utmost respect for this girl and her family, we must remember that to make a sacrament one has to meet certain requirements not meet the girl”.
