Torrevieja council closed the doors of the town hall on Thursday to observe a minute’s silence in respect to the dead and injured following the horrific train crash on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela.
The mayor was joined on the town hall steps by the by the deputy Minister of Alicante, Alberto Martinez, who, alongside councilors and town hall employees closed the Ayuntamiento doors at 12 noon.
On behalf of the city of Torrevieja, the mayor had already conveyed his heartfelt condolences to all the families of the dead and injured after they had suffered such terrible pain on the official feast day of Santiago de Compostela.
Following the minute’s silence the mayor said that he had sent two telegrams of regret to the mayor of Santiago de Compostela, Angel Currás, and the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, affirming the condolences of the city.
A further minute’s silence was also observed on Friday in the Plenary Hall of the Municipality of Torrevieja prior to the regular meeting.
